    Get PDF

“We’re better off out”: a multimodal critical discourse analysis of one of UKip’s videos during the Brexit campaign

    Get PDF
Since Brexit is quite a recent event, few studies have been published so far and none have focused on either of the videos part of UKip’s Brexit campaign. This dissertation is focused on uncovering the ways in which UKip’s ideas are portrayed in one of their Brexit campaign videos entitled “We’re Better Off Out.” An introduction to multimodal critical discourse analysis is provided as well as a brief summary of this campaign. The methodology used primarily draws upon Machin and Mayr’s (2012) comprehensive toolkit as regards multimodal analysis to examine this video both textually and visually. We're Better Off Out.”

    XMM-Newton observations of 1A 0535+262 in quiescence

Accretion onto magnetized neutron stars is expected to be centrifugally inhibited at low accretion rates. Several sources, however, are known to pulsate in quiescence at luminosities below the theoretical limit predicted for the onset of the centrifugal barrier. The source 1A 0535+262 is one of them. Here we present the results of an analysis of a ~50 ks long XMM-Newton observation of 1A 0535+262 in quiescence. At the time of the observation, the neutron star was close to apastron, and the source had remained quiet for two orbital cycles. In spite of this, we detected a pulsed X-ray flux of ~3e-11 erg/cm2/s . Several observed properties, including the power spectrum, remained similar to those observed in the outbursts. Particularly, we have found that the frequency of the break detected in the quiescent noise power spectrum follows the same correlation with flux observed when the source is in outburst. This correlation has been associated with the truncation of the accretion disk at the magnetosphere boundary. We argue that our result, along with other arguments previously reported in the literature, suggests that the accretion in quiescence also proceeds from an accretion disk around the neutron star. The proposed scenario consistently explains the energy of the cyclotron line observed in 1A 0535+262, and the timing properties of the source including the spin frequency evolution within and between the outbursts, and the frequency of the break in power spectrum.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&

Archives cannot be left out the Internet as the Web has become an indispensable tool for the development of the societies and to publicize the services and products that the institutions offer. This openness and diffusion of the archive through the Internet has also brought the need to check what level of quality they present. To do that it is necessary to evaluate them and to attend to some indicators or specific features related to their design, structure or contents. The main target of his work is to design a comprehensive template of specific characteristics for the evaluation of archive websites. The results and conclusions of this work demonstrate that it is possible to design a specific model of features determining which ones are those that best represent the quality of an archive on the Web.Los archivos no pueden quedarse al margen de Internet puesto que la Red se ha convertido en una herramienta imprescindible para el desarrollo de las sociedades y para dar a conocer los servicios y los productos que ofrecen las instituciones.

Phenols and Melanoidins as Natural Antioxidants in Beer. Structure, Reactivity and Antioxidant Activity

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaBeer is one of the most consumed drinks around the world, containing a variety of compounds that offer both appreciated sensorial characteristics and health advantages. Important healthy compounds in beer are those with antioxidant properties that attenuate the content of free radicals produced as by-products in the human metabolism, exerting an appreciable effect against cancers or cardiovascular diseases. This work details a study of antioxidant compounds present in beer, focusing on the two main groups: phenols (including polyphenolic forms) and melanoidins, formed specifically during brewing as Maillard products. The fundaments of the most important methods to evaluate beer antioxidant activity, the main antioxidant compounds present in beer—especially those with healthy properties—and the new trends to increase beer antioxidant activity are also discussed

Thermal deterioration of the trans-/cis-ratio of bittering agents of commercial beers

Producción CientíficaThe use of reduced isomerised hop extracts to achieve both bitterness and light stability became very popular during the last decade. Changes during storage in four hop extracts and seven commercial lager beers are studied using HPLC and spectrophotometric techniques. The degradation of the iso-α-acids and tetrahydro iso-α-acids as a function of time is represented by the ratio, in percentage, of the sum of trans-isomer concentration to the sum of the cis-isomer concentration (T/C). The results provided conclusive evidence that the gradual decreased of bitterness intensity in beer was due to the degradation of iso-α-acids, notably to the instability of the trans-iso-α-acids. When the beers were stored for 14 days at 45◦C the decrease of the T/C average varied from 8.6 to 14.0%, except in lemon beer, in which case, T/C decreased 36.9%. The results allowed us to infer that in open storage and/or warm conditions the deterioration of beer was critical above 35◦C. On the other hand, the results showed that tetrahydro iso-α-acids remained unaltered
